How far you go, how far back you get
Straight-line distance from Raisina against the year each site was founded. Time runs left to right, oldest first. The further south you go, the older Delhi gets: about 55 years per kilometre.

Three double domes, three traditions
A double dome is two shells, one inside the other. Three buildings on this map have one, and each came from a different tradition. Florence's cathedral dome is older than all three but belongs to a separate line, so it's shown here for comparison only.
When New Delhi was laid out in the 1920s and early 1930s, many of its avenues were named after earlier rulers of India, from Ashoka to Aurangzeb, and the rest after viceroys and other Europeans who ruled parts of India. According to the historian Narayani Gupta, Percival Spear, who drew attention to the street names in his 1943 book on Delhi, had himself been asked to suggest names from Indian history. Many have been renamed since, some as recently as 2023. The map gives today’s name, with older names in brackets. Hover or tap a road, or a name in the list, to pick it out.
